Native American Unit
•January 9, 2008 • Leave a CommentStudents will be given a pre-test to judge knowledge of Native American oral traditions. The essential question for this lesson is: How have Native American Myths, traditions, and symbols had an effect on society and throughout time?
We will explore several myths as well as research how Native American symbols continue to be prevalent in our society today. We will be reading, “The Earth on Turtle’s Back,” and “The Navajo Origin Legend.”
Homework: Students will be responsible for reading “When Grizzlies Walked Upright.”
Class assignments: Students will compare/contrast two myths; students will be given an assignment utilizing the following links…native-american-web-sites.doc Explore 2-3 sites on Native American symbols and 2-3 sites on Native American myths. You will be required to turn in a written, paraphrased version of your favorite myth found online, along with the original myth printed out. Also, explore the different symbols used by Native Americans and identify three symbols that have endured and can be found in today’s society.
